Yesterday, Sunday, May 22, 2022, the 10th anniversary Skiathos Trail Run was successfully held. The international half marathon race of mountain running 24 km “On the paths of Papadiamantis” (90% forest and mountain route and 10% asphalt, with large altitude differences and maximum ascent at 1354 m., IBP = 276 RNG) attracts the more athletes each year, in addition to his steady recurring fans.
The route connects the city of Skiathos with the medieval city of the island, the Castle of incomparable and wild beauty, and highlights on the one hand the natural beauty of the hinterland and on the other hand its cultural heritage, passing through chapels and monasteries, with a special dome of Mr. Alexander. At the same time, the 10 km Urban Trail Run took place on the cobbled streets of the city of Skiathos, while our youngest friends also ran, as every year, selected distances of 0.5 km, 1 and 1.5 km in the old port of Skiathos.
This year, the 800m Special Olympics Skiathos Run was organized in collaboration with the Special Olympics Hellas federation, in which people with Down syndrome and autism participated. This year’s race was dedicated to the memory of our compatriot, founder and honorary president of Special Olympics Hellas, Andrea Potamiano, who passed away in July 2021.
In addition, one of the aims of the Skiathos Trail Run is to help the young people, and not only, of Skiathos to become aware of issues related to the environment and society and to act as active citizens through volunteering, helping to prepare and conduct games. Thus, from this year, a part of the income resulting from sponsorships and registrations will be donated to support the activities and excursions of the Environmental Team of Skiathos High School to Environmental Education Centers (KPE) or to destinations of special natural beauty.
In conclusion, we would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and relatives of the British athlete who died due to opposition, despite the immediate intervention and unremitting efforts of rescuers and Dr. Egnatiadis and to thank you all for your cooperation and valuable help. in the smooth running of the games. Specifically, we would like to thank the Skiathos Port Authority, the Skiathos Police Department, the Greek Rescue Team-Northern Sporades Branch, the Hellenic Guiding Corps-Skiathos Local Department, SkiathosLife.gr, the sponsors for both the sponsors and the sponsors support with items, discounts and services and finally the more than 100 volunteers, young and old, who are always the soul of the event and who participated in the secretarial support, checkpoints and supply points on the mountain route and at hubs throughout route lengths, for photographic and video coverage.
