In Ano Gatzea, is the Olive & Oil museum hosted at the ground floor of a stone house belonging to Ioannis Vogiatzis located at the railway station square. It is a building built in 1924 and its ground floor was used for various family agricultural works many relating to the process of olives.
If you visit the museum today, you will have the chance to see the well preserved tools and items that were found in the house and were used for processing olives and oil. Storage barrels, amphorae of every size occupy the floor. The museum features themes where the visitor can be educated regarding the collection, picking, process and trading of olive. Also since olive is the base for soap, there’s also an exhibit on the process of soap production.
Olives are one of the most important cultivations of Pelion, since the exceptional climate and the grounds fertility are ideal for the olive trees to grow. Pelion producers pick, process and trade olives and oil, so the existence of such a museum displaying their craftsmanship was essential.
