A beautiful and picturesque village of Pelion, situated between Milies and Agios Georgios, at an altitude of 450 meters and at a distance of 30 km from the city of Volos. One can admire the traditional Pelion architecture with the many restored mansions that exist and also the impressive square where the central kalderimi path leads.
The village’s history begins in the 16th century, when wealthy Greeks of Egypt inhabited it. In fact Vizitsa, along with Makrinitsa and Pinakates, have been declared as preserved settlements of absolute protection by the presidential decree of 1980, when the EOT (Greek Tourism Organization) started the construction and renovation of old mansions. For this reason it has been awarded the “Golden Apple” award.
What is admired by the thousands of visitors and will captivate you from the first sight is the picturesque area with it cobbled paths, the beautiful mansions and the marble fountains scattered around. When you find yourself in Vizitsa visit the monastery of Agiou Ioanni tou Prodromou (Saint John the Baptist) built in 1789 by Dimitris Zipaniotis featuring unique murals, and also visit the Zoodochou Pigis (Life-Giving spring) church dating from 1725.The center of the cultural life of the village, of course, is the large paved square, surrounded by old plane trees. Do not forget to enjoy a coffee at one of the traditional cafes, and be refreshed with water from the stone fountain “Mousga”, built in 1888.
If you are fond of hiking, then this is the ideal destination for you. One of the best activities you could do in this village is a stroll through the well-preserved kalderimi paths leading to every corner of the village. There are many trails one can follow, such as the one that leads to the Milies train station.
The village is ideal for a visit all year round as it gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy both the mountain (Close to the Agrioleukes Ski Center) and the sea (beaches of Pagasetic and Aegean)
You can arrange your visit to coincide with one of the fairs that are organized in the village square such as the religious fair of Agion Anargiron every year on July 1st or the celebration of Panagias (Virgin Mary) on 15th of August and the fair of Agios Ioannis on 29th of August where traditionally made fava is served to all visitors.
Finally, as the village is famous for its local wine and tsipouro, do not leave without trying or buying from one of the local shops. They will serve as the best memory from your visit to this idyllic place.
