Volos Nea Anchialos airport is Greece’s most modern regional airport. It provides excellent access to the Central Greek region of Thessaly. The cities of Volos, Larisa and Lamia, the world famous heritage site of Meteora, the Pelion peninsular and (by ferry transfer) the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos and Evia. The problem is very few airlines fly to Volos. Foreign visitors can only fly to Thessaloniki or Athens to reach our region by road and the travelling time and cost means that many people who would like to visit do not come. Our region of Thessaly has failed to bring new flights to Volos airport. It has failed to communicate with airlines successfully and promote our airport as the gateway to a viable and popular holiday destination. We are calling on the central Greek government to step in. To take all neccessary steps to ensure our airport has a ‘route developer’ in place who will make the necessary business case to attract airlines. We demand that our airport and region is represented at the European Airline Routes Conferences and actively seeks new flights year round to Volos from major European destinations.
