Monastery of the Twelve Apostles (Red Church)
There are two different interpretations involving the name of the monastery situated in the western edge of Karditsa. The first one argues that the exterior of the small old church had been painted red thus it took its name from the colour; the second one argues that the Germans had slaughtered the nuns of the monastery so it was named “Red Church”. It’s a monastery that accommodates only nuns, eight to be exact, who constitute a fraternity including the nuns of Agios Georgios Karaiskakis monastery. An Asylum for Incurable was founded in an area very close to this monastery, fully equipped to accommodate one hundred patients.
