Feta is a product with Protected Designation and Origin (PDO) and is a key link in the food chain of the Greeks filling the tables of families with Greek salad, traditional pies and other hearty meals. One of the myths heard is that the cheese was granted by the Gods of Olympus in humans. Is a source of
protein and calcium vitamins. It is our national product known for its unique flavor and has been linked Elassona since the area produces a large percentage of the nation-production. The production is an engaging slice of a large portion of people who base their income in Elassona and the prefectures of Trikala, Karditsa and Magnesia. In the region of Thessaly thirty dairies total produce about 30,000 tons per year, equivalent to 30% of the nation-production when whole Greece in 2011 had produced 92,200 tons total.
Every year the Festival Feta takes place in the city of Elassona in September. The festival is one of the most important events taking place in Thessaly and thousands of visitors from all corners of Greece visits Elassona. Its purpose is to highlight the slice and understand the product, the place it deserves in the Greek and international market.
