The train route Volos – Milies, the Legendary Steam-powered ”Moutzouris” is moving to the narrower tracks of Europe in 60 inches width and this make it unique in the world. Named ”Moutzouris” because it was moving with charcoal and from the black smoke his passengers were black.
From the beginning of last century until 1971 was the link in the countryside with the port of Volos. The first route made on October 12, 1895 from Volos to Ano Lechonia at central Pelion and eight years later, on July 2, 1903 was inaugurated the extension from the Ano Lechonia to Milies.
It is integrated of the UNESCO network at ”Friends of treasures of the world”, ranking second in the treasures of the world as a pilot program. it is also a listed building from 1985 and since 1996 is operating for tourist purposes by a beautiful drive through the verdant mount Pelion.
In 2000 the legendary Moutzouris was replaced by a diesel engine thus stopping the burning of coal. The path followed is as follows: Ano Lechonia – Ano Gatzea – Agia Triada – Pinakates – Milies. It is 15 km and takes about half an hour. Departs at 10am and arrives at 11:30 at Milies.
The route Ano Lechonia – Milies is made in slopes and beautiful views of Pagassitikos Gulf and passes through picturesque stone arches, over eight stone bridges hewn marble stone (double-arched, three-arched and a five-arched) and a metal bridge, the bridge of de Chirico. Two tunnels were built for the needs of the project and a large number of supports with respect to the environment.
