Fanari is a picturesque village of Karditsa. The Byzantine Castle of Fanari built in the 13th century in a defensive position of great importance and the passage of Trikala for Arta, the castle served both locals and conquerors. Until the 15th century it was used exclusively military, while the 15th century onwards is the seat of the diocese.
Its size is small, it is only 2.6 acres and the thickness of the wall is 2 meters. Inside the castle we find a vaulted building that served as gunpowder, the ruins of a mosque which is built on an area where the bath and a large rainwater tank.
The castle is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 14:00 noon.
The route from Karditsa to Castle Fanari is also a very beautiful cycling route for experienced cyclists. Also, explore Fanari village on foot in order to see the beautiful and from another era architecture of the village.
How to get there
Follow Fanari street from karditsa that leads after 15 minutes car ride to the picturesque village Fanari. Once you cross the village and find yourself on the other end you will see the church of Saint Seraphim, turn right and immediately left and uphill for about five minutes until you reach the castle.
