Ampelakia is a village located on the foothill of mountain Ossa, or as it’s known nowadays, mountain Kissavos. Its history goes back to 18th century due to its’ great commercial activities. The colorful threads made of cotton, and especially those in deep red color, were the reason Ampelakia village became famous not only in mainland (Greece) but all over Europe, as well.
The economic prosperity of this village resulted to a higher educational level of its citizens, to a pioneering administrative system -for those times – and to the imposingly mansions which still stand and adorn the village of Ampelakia.
What to see
Visit the folklore museum of Ampelakia and also the center of Cultural Heritage.
Visit the mansion of George Swartz, president of the cooperatives, built in 1798 at the entrance of the community. This majestic mansion is a mixture of the topic folklore architecture, the European barock and has some influences from Maroco and Minor Asia.
Finally, the beautiful stone narrow streets of the village will get you back in time, at another era.
